SJU alumnus answers call of the wild

Snow. Puppies. The great outdoors. It sounds like a Minnesota fantasy—one SJU alumnus Paul Schurke made a reality when he started Wintergreen Dogsledding Lodge 38 years ago.
Schurke’s love of the outdoors was sparked by summers spent at his family’s cabin on the Apple River, this love grew when he came to St. John’s and got involved in Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG), a national organization on college campuses that allows students to get involved with environmental and consumerist issues.

CSB history made: Track and field finishes with three All-Americans, 12th team overall

The National Indoor Track and Field Championships took place March 10-11 in Naperville, Illinois.

At Nationals, there were 16 total athletes from the MIAC Conference: 10 were women and three of them were Blazers.

Sophomore Jenna Degen and seniors London Stelten and Allison Kosobud represented St. Ben’s at the biggest meet of the season. (more…)

Playing an open mic night in London led Jake Braun to a record deal with Trellis Records.

Everyone wants their experience abroad to be one to remember. One SJU student has one to sing about.

SJU junior Jake Braun is in the process of signing a record deal with Trellis Records, a London-based record label. This deal became a reality for Braun after playing an open mic night at Blueberry Bar in London on January 18, while studying abroad. (more…)

Former White House Chief of Staff sits down for a pint

The 100th Politics and a Pint welcomed the return of alumnus Denis McDonough ‘92, former White House Chief of Staff to President Barack Obama. The event was held Tuesday, March 14 in Pellegrene Auditorium at St. John’s. Fellow Johnnie alumnus, Dr. Matt Lindstrom ‘92, conducted the interview. Lindstrom is a political science professor at St. John’s and Director of the Eugene J. McCarthy Center for Public Policy and Civic Engagement.
Typically, Politics and a Pint is hosted in Brother Willie’s Pub. However, McDonough’s high-profile status and the limited amount of time organizers had to prepare for his arrival required that the session be held in Pellegrene.

Co-op commemorates five years

Co-op commemorates five years

The Minnesota Street Market is celebrating its fifth anniversary as St. Joseph’s local food and art co-op.

The co-op opened in 2012 after the closure of a local grocery store that had been family-owned for over 100 years. The grocery store, Loso’s, was named after an original settler of St. Joseph, Peter Loso. His son, Martin Loso, opened the store in 1899. (more…)
