Seniors Tish Alexander, Morgan Dale, and Brianna Barret look forward to the upcoming season. | Mike Terharr

Brianna Barrett, an elementary education major from Annandale is a senior guard on the College of St. Benedict’s basketball team. Last year, Barrett finished third in the MIAC in points per game averaging 15.1. She finished 2nd in the MIAC in three point percentage at 41.0. She started all 27 games for the Blazers and averaged 28.8 minutes per game. The Record’s Henry Dorgan sat down with her to talk about the Blazers goals for the 2013-2014 season, the rest of the competition in the MIAC, and the rest of the seniors on the Blazers.

Henry Dorgan:

What’re your goals this season?

Brianna Barrett:

Our team was preseason ranked second in the MIAC, and our goal is to be No. 1. We’d like to win the MIAC playoffs and make it to regionals.

What are you looking to improve on from last year?

BB:

We struggled defensively last year, but this year, we are completely different this year. We’re doing exactly what we need to do to get better by showing more aggressiveness and hustle on defense. I struggled last year defensively as well. Aside from defense, I need to improve rebounding.

HD:

What are you going to try to continue from last year?

BB:

We need to protect our home court by winning all of our home games. It’s more comforting to play at Claire Lynch Gymnasium because we practice there everyday, and we have very good fan turnout. We’re tough to play on home court.

HD:

What is the team dynamic like?

BB:

Last year, we had really good team chemistry, which was really important to our success. We have teamwork on and off the court and we hang out outside of basketball. One thing that is unique to us is that we intermingle with grades. The seniors and the freshmen hang out just as we hang out with other grades.

HD:

What teams are going to be tough to beat in the MIAC?

BB:

St. Thomas is ranked 1st in the conference. They’re so aggressive and provide lots of pressure on defense. St. Mary’s and Concordia will be tough as well. The inter-conference play will be interesting this year because a lot of teams lost key players, so every team is going to be different.

HD:

What are your strengths?

BB:

As a team, our biggest strength is how we play together. The three seniors, including myself, are in the starting lineup, so we’ve developed a great relationship on the court. We connect in an unique way. Individually, I have a good work ethic and I’m scrappy on the court. My post up game is also one of my strengths although I’m only 5’7″.

HD:

How would you describe your playing style?

BB:

My best quality is my work ethic. I love the game of basketball and I’ve been taught to work hard growing up. Speaking of work ethic, my quickness is something I’ve worked on for a long time, and it helps me a lot in my game. I also think I’m very strong offensively.

HD:

What are some weaknesses as a team?

BB:

We are an aggressive and active team so sometimes we have a difficult time slowing down our game. Personally, I need to improve on my rebounding and using my left hand.

HD:

What’s the best part about playing for CSB?

BB:

The basketball team is my 2nd family. We get along so well, and I can always go to my teammates with any problems I’m having. Because we’re so closely knit, it makes playing the game that much more enjoyable.

HD:

How would you describe the individual strengths of each senior?

BB:

Morgan Dale- She is crucial to our team because she is an amazing rebounder. She got a double-double in both games we have had this season. She’s one of our starting forwards who is a good shooter and can work inside.

Tish Alexander- She is an amazing clutch 3-point shooter and great on defense. She has long arms, so she has an easy time stealing the ball from opponents. Tish is a really smart player.
