Last week The Record published a story titled, “Clemens and Alcuin installed light therapy lamps,” which emphasized the benefits of light therapy lamps and their effectiveness in relieving the consequences of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of seasonal depression. I didn’t intend to address this article until I came across another that discussed light therapy lamps while surfing the web. I’d like to share some extracts of it with you.
Light therapy lamps in high demand

Since the light therapy lamps were installed in Alcuin and Clemens libraries, they have been extremely popular. In fact, early this week, student lines at Clemens library extended all the way to Good to Go.
“I just need a pick-me-up, just enough happiness to help me finish my homework due tomorrow,” said SJU sophomore Patrick Brown.
Brown isn’t alone. Many students report that they cannot do much of anything without the magical powers of light therapy.
Implemented as a means to mitigate the crippling effects of SAD, these lamps were utilized frequently by emotionally susceptible students. After seeing positive results, these students recommended the lamps to friends going through tough times.
“I was really struggling after my boyfriend and I broke up, so my roommate suggested I try the new therapy lamps. Although I wasn’t sure I had SAD, I went anyway. And I kept going. And going,” said CSB junior Angel Daley.
Students like Daley found respite under the light; but when the demand for the lamps skyrocketed, they found it harder to spend the recommended 30 minutes under the light per day. And this caused them to grow sad.
“When I came here as a freshmen, everyone was so cheerful and friendly. Now, everyone is so sad, and few have enough energy to even say hi. People claimed the lights made people happier, and everyone jumped to use them as a shortcut to happiness. Now we’re all miserable,” Daley said.
–Objects don’t produce happiness. Living earnestly does.
