St. John’s Senate Update

The St. John’s Senate (SJS) meeting on Monday, Jan. 30, focused on two main topics of discussion. The Senate reviewed previously discused club funding process as well as the possibility of hosting another Johnnie Day.

The Senate primarily examined the logistical likelihood of having another Johnnie Day. This patriotic school day typically happens once a year, but the past success in the fall provided the Senate reason enough to do it again in the spring. The day which was celebrated earlier this school year provided students with free Johnnie bread, festive bus stop music and cheap school themed T-shirts.

Senator Andrew Hovel addressed the fall Johnnie Day committee.

“You could all land serious marketing jobs with how well you were able to sell (shirts) in the fall,” Hovel said.

Senators mainly focused on the idea of T-shirt sales, and eventually came to the consensus that there will be another Johnnie Day.

Decision making criteria was based on how Johnnie Day can help eliminate a portion of Senate debt, market the Senate to the student body and provide other organizations a day to advertise themselves. The only apprehensions were that spring weather is far more unpredictable and may impede on the events success.

The Senate also revisited the subject of the club funding process. The whole club system has been in a state of flux since the resignation of coordinator Matt Frie.

The Senate has since been working with replacement coordinator Bob Alpers and has proposed that all creation of club sports, budget allocations and excessive capital requests shall be granted only under authorization of the Senate.

The Senate briefly revisited their decision to fund a $7,280 pre-med club trip and a $1,000 Spanish club speaker.

Prior to the meeting, Senator Joseph Miller expressed how little there was to address this night.

“This time of year, especially being recently back from break, there is hardly anything on the agenda tonight,” Miller said.

The next St. John’s Senate meeting will be at 9:20 p.m., Monday, Feb. 6 in Sexton 200.
