St. Ben’s Senate Update

The St. Ben’s Senate (SBS) met on Feb. 1 to discuss the upcoming Senate Special Elections and possible academic calendar changes.

President Anna Martin reminded senators that Special Elections are drawing near. Election packets have been distributed to students and are due by 8 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 5. In addition, on Sunday, Feb. 12, candidates will give speeches and answer questions in the Gorecki Fireside Lounge.

“Please bring lots of questions for the candidates,” Martin said. “Their answers are not only helpful for us, but also to other voters.”

Special Elections voting will take place on Feb. 13 and results will be announced Feb. 14.

Student Activities Representative Ellen Newkirk spoke about possible changes to the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 academic calendars.

Currently during the Fall Semester, Study Day falls on a Friday and there has been some questioning as to whether Friday is practical. The Calendar Committee has discussed changing Study Day to a Monday instead.

“We both think Monday would be more productive (for Study Day),” said Newkirk about her discussion with a Saint John’s Senate Representative.

In order to move Study Day to Monday, an extra free day needs to be added sometime during the Fall Semester. Newkirk reported that the Committee has placed the free day on Nov. 4 on the 2013-2014 calendar. However, there was discussion about adding the free day to Fall Break instead.

The next SBS meeting will be 5 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8 in Gorecki 120.
