To have the opportunity to fulfill a dream that at times seems nearly unreachable, is a heroic success that puts its founders on cloud nine; to accomplish this with your best friend however, is an act that is truly remarkable.
For CSB seniors Lauren Mueller and Kelsey Minten, this seemingly unattainable goal is a reality. Through the founding of their band Bennie 20, both fulfill their musical desires in a way that is not only satisfying but also enjoyable.
As talented musicians since elementary school, through numerous choirs for Mueller and guitar lessons for Minten, both expanded their talents when they formed their band during their sophomore year at CSB.
“We were roommates sophomore year and always had the same tastes in music. One night, we just started jamming. It was a natural progression of our relationship,” Mueller said.
For those diehard Bennie 20 fans, or students simply hoping to invest their time and dedication into a new on-campus talent, Mueller and Minten will have a performance at the Local Blend on Saturday, February 18 at 8 p.m. A fellow CSB/SJU band, Rodeo Clown, will join them for the evening.
The local St. Joseph coffee shop has proven to be a successful venue in the past, one that both Mueller and Minten think exemplifies the persona they are searching for.
“We think that the Local Blend is a perfect venue for us. It is low-key, acoustic and chill. A perfect place to sit back, relax and have a cup of coffee,” Mueller said.
Vahna Ahlbrecht, an employee at the Local Blend, concurs with this sentiment. Through her experience of numerous performances at the coffee shop, she reflects the ideas expressed by both Mueller and Minten.
“As opposed to the Red Carpet, it is a nice small venue for artists who are just starting out,” she said.
Mueller and Minten have experienced numerous encounters in which individuals have questioned the sincerity of Bennie 20.
“The name Bennie 20 worked well. At the time, we were both Bennies and were both 20 years old. We are not trying to be famous. We are trying to take back the name and make it more positive,” Minten said.
“Plus, it is also pretty funny,” Mueller said.
Although Mueller and Minten have enjoyed a successful fan following, through their Facebook and public efforts, they still show concern in the amount of on-campus all-female bands. In fact, Bennie 20 is the only one in existence.
“It is kind of sad. We want people to know that singing is not only a boy thing. Go for it. Play at open microphone night. Don’t be afraid. Everyone here in the community is supportive,” Minten said.
So, are you feeling musically inclined? Be brave and take a cue from your fellow Bennies who began their collaboration one night in a simple dorm room jam session. Are you itching to hear more from this relatively unknown group but are unable to make it on February 18? Do not fear; Bennie 20 is slated to release their first official single on this year’s “Campus Groove” CD.
