`Tough loss’ is a phrase the CSB Hockey team is all too familiar with thus far this season. The Blazers are 3-5-2 (1-3-2 MIAC), and have had some trouble getting over the `hump’ in close games this season. Their most recent was an overtime loss 4-3 to St. Kate’s last Sunday, Dec. 3.
Both games in the weekend series against St. Kate’s were settled in overtime, with Saturday’s game ending in a 3-3 tie. These close games have made the Blazers anxious for wins.
“We’re learning that we can compete with anyone,” first year head Coach Jennifer Kranz said. “We’re improving a lot in each game. We just need to realize that we can compete with everybody we take the ice with.”
While tough losses may discourage most teams, the Blazers remain focused on overcoming their struggles scoring late in the game and to put numbers in the win column. Developing a calm and confident mentality when the game is on the line is crucial for their success the rest of the season.
“We need to learn to play in those situations,” senior captain Kerri Graske said. “Finishing games is definitely a mindset. We just need to continue to stay motivated and excited.”
The Blazers have what it takes to get the job done, getting contributions from both upperclassmen and underclassmen alike. “Sophomore goalie Kaitlyn Rolando has been steady between the pipes and Sophomore defenseman Christine Broderson came up with big plays last weekend, so the talent level across the board is definitely there,” Kranz commented. “And Graske has been a great leader by keeping the locker room calm and leading by example.”
Gelling as a team will especially be important. Being a first year coach, Kranz has not had the luxury of working with her players for multiple years, but knew team unity would be crucial for success.
“They have done a fantastic job at rallying around each other,” Kranz said. “It says a lot about our leadership and will help us get better week in and week out.”
Graske agreed that the team has become more of a cohesive unit as the year has progressed.
“Everyone backs each other up. Returners have supported incomers and freshmen have stepped up big for us,” she said.
The team has many upcoming challenges as they hit the road for their next five games, including a trip to New Hampshire over winter break where they will face some tough east coast competition.
The next home game comes on Jan. 27 against Hamline at St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Complex. If the Blazers can continue string together wins within the MIAC, they could make the playoffs.
