Trending @CSB/SJU: Random Acts of Kindness

Whew, TGIF. What a long week. Is it Christmas Break yet? Well, speaking of Christmas, we were thinking that we should bring the Christmas spirit to campus a few weeks early this year. It’s the brightest time of the year! Why not celebrate it more often? I think what makes Christmas so wonderful is that people engage in random acts of kindness all the time.

We, The Record Hashtags, want to spread the Christmas cheer throughout the year (we think rhyming is a random act of kindness). These random acts of kindness do not need to be large, elaborate things. Simply opening the door for someone or giving a stranger a high five (or high ten) is a random act of kindness. If you successfully make the other person smile or laugh, you have won.

You might be thinking, “Hey! I’m never in an area where I can commit a random act of
kindness. I’m always in class, on the Link, or in the Reef.”

You may think that you’re “too busy,” but you’re not. Random acts of kindness can be done anywhere and everywhere on campus. We are here to help you with some ideas.

We have a simple list of places in which you will be during the day, and we have suggestions for random acts of kindness (RAK) for each one. We have also ranked these RAK by
starting with things that will make people grin then moving to more extreme, funny RAK.

The Dining Areas:

Grin: Getting cookies for the whole table

Smile: Someone freaking out that there are shrimp poppers today

Laugh: Getting a 12 inch ice cream cone

Passing Time:

Grin: Tell a Bennie she looks nice even though she’s wearing Uggs and sweatpants (real original!)

Smile: Hug someone random

Laugh: Excessively picking your wedgie

In Class:

Grin: leaving a note for the next kid to read at your desk

Smile: Answering questions in class when everyone knows you are still drunk from the night before

Laugh: Getting caught by the professor while you are texting in class

Parties:

Grin: Slyly winking at
somebody

Smile: Butt slapping

Laugh: When people fall and hurt themselves

The Link:

Grin: Seeing someone give up their seat for another person

Smile: Getting the answer right on the trivia bus

Laugh: Convincing the Link driver to break traffic laws

It is possible to cheer anyone up. In the immortal words of R. Kelly, “If you can dream it, you can do it. If you just believe it, there’s nothing to it.”

Just do something to make someone else smile this week, and if someone makes you smile, pay it forward. Make someone else smile by doing something dumb, sweet or funny.

This week’s Tweet O’ the Week is #randomactsofkindness. We, the RecordHashTags, want to hear about what you did this week to make someone else smile. When you catchsomeone doing something or if you do something, tweet #randomactsofkindness at us, @RecordHashTags, and we will put the best tweets in our next week’s article.
