St. Ben’s Senate debated the motion to approve the resolution of the Sustainability Master Plan in its meeting this week. Judy Purman, Director of the Sustainability Office, informed the Senate and answered questions about sustainability and its importance.
“It’s very fundamental to the Benedictine mission of the college,” Purman said. “We need to teach our students the importance of this commitment because it affects their world.”
This Sustainability Master Plan represents a collaborative group on campus promoting the importance of sustainability.
“I would like to be more informed and (for) the students to be more informed on this topic so that, when voting on this motion, I can feel like I am supporting the student’s best interests and representing the student’s opinions,” Senator Riley Johnson said.
Seven priority areas were created including food and dining, grounds, partnership and outreach, responsible consumption and sustainability education. The sustainability group is interested in partnering with the St. Ben’s Senate so it can monitor how the students feel about the new sustainability implications on campus.
“This will be a really great long-lasting improvement to the college that we can say we were on the Senate that supported this motion,” Senator Madeline Page said.
A motion in support of the resolution passed 10-3-3.
The Senate also discussed the motion to allocate $200 to the Peer Resource Program for the annual Roller Disco. The money would be put towards perennial decorations and the remainder of the costs to rent the skates.
“I think we should fund them in full,” Johnson said. “This is a great even that a lot of students attend and enjoy and I think we should be excited to fund the perennial decorations so we are supporting the improvement of this event that will be re-used every year.”
The motion to allocate $200 to the Peer Resource Program for the annual Roller Disco passed.
There will be no St. Ben’s Senate meeting next week due to Thanksgiving Break. The next St. Ben’s Senate meeting will be on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. in Gorecki 120.
