In this week’s Senate meeting, SJS discussed the appeals from CSB/SJU campus clubs for funding. Only a select number of clubs were aware of this opportunity. The SJS debated on whether to open up this opportunity to appeal for funding by sending an email to all campus clubs.
“I think it would be better to send out the e-mail to all clubs,” Senator Jacob Harris said. “It would look better and it is part of our job as the Senate.”
The SJS decided to inform all campus clubs of this opportunity for funding from the Co-Funding Board of spontaneous requests. All appeals from campus clubs will be due Friday, Sept. 30, and funding will be determined by the SJS.
During the open forum, representatives from the St John’s Lacrosse Club answered questions from the Senate on their appeal for $37,825 in funding. Although the amount was dropped from their original appeal, the Senate approved the motion for $1,900 for the Lacrosse Club.
“I think it’s a sign of good faith on our part to support this,” Chairman Kevin Abbas said.
After a long debate, SJS also approved $7,000 more to go to the Collegiate Readership Program. The Senate gave $6,000 to the program last spring.
Chairman Abbas originally appealed to allocate $9,000 to the readership program to match the $15,000 the St. Ben’s Senate gave the program, but the amount was ruled too much.
The St. John’s Senate meeting discussed and congratulated the success of Johnnie Day as well as the entire Homecoming weekend.
“I think that Johnnie Day was a great success” said Dean of Students Mike Connolly.
The next SJS meeting will be held at 9:20 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, in Sexton 200.
