SBS faces large requests

Amnesty International requested the St. Ben’s Senate (SBS) pass a motion allocating $1,000 to fund an unforeseeable cost in bringing the Arhuacos indigenous group to campus. Funds were originally allocated but Amnesty did not take into account the funding needed for international tax fees and entry/exit fees as the group hails from Colombia.

“I see this as an unforeseen request,” co-funding board member Brenna Finley.

The Amnesty International Club was also encouraged to go to the St. John’s Senate for funding. The majority of the senate was in approval to allocate the funds.

“I am in support of this,” Senator Krause said.

The SBS decided to allocate $1,000 to Amnesty International to help overcome their cost problem.

The Outdoor Leadership Center (OLC) came to the Senate asking for an allocation of $1000 for the annual Fruit at the Finish Triathlon event being held next week. Members of Peer Resource Program and OLC stressed the importance of this event because it is the only event in the academic year that brings in profit.

“I think it is a really great initiative and we have the money,” Trustee Kathryn Hauff said.

The money the OLC was asking for will be used for prizes and food. There was some dissent in funding this request because it is an annual event.

“I just don’t know how I feel funding this over and over again.“ Vice President Burgason said.

At the end of the discussion most senators were in favor of the motion and $1,000 was allocated.

“I don’t think it’s negative funding things over and over again,” Treasurer Jennie Olson added.

Brenna Finley of the Co-Funding Board informed those in attendance that the budget approval process for clubs has begun.

“As you all know Spring Funding is here,” Senator Finley said.

Club presentations will begin next week and deliberations will be the following Saturday and Sunday.

The Constitution of the SBS was amended and voted on. Trustee Hauff informed everyone that the changes will posted to the SBS Sharepoint website for the general public to review.

Senate Public Relations Rep. Miesen would like to inform all Bennies that elections are coming up on Monday and would like to encourage all Bennies to vote. Candidate speeches will takes place at 7:30 p.m. this Sunday in the Fireside Lounge of Gorecki.

The last St. Ben’s Senate meeting of the year will take place next 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13 in Gorecki 120.
